Zanzibar Floods

BBC news :

All schools on the islands of Zanzibar have been temporarily closed because of flooding following weeks of heavy rains, says the education minister.
The decision was taken for the safety of children and teachers after some schools were left submerged in water, minister Riziki Pemba Juma said.
The rains have also destroyed property and roads.
More than 350,000 students are currently enrolled in school in the semi-autonomous region of Tanzania.

Islam arrives in Oman

Islam arrives in Oman

In the year 629 the kings of Oman received a letter from the Prophet Mohammed exhorting them to convert to his new religion. Delegations between the kings and the Prophet were exchanged, the kings were convinced and converted freely.

Letter of the Prophet Mohammeds to the kings of OmanIn the year 629 the two kings of Oman, Abd and Jaifar, who were sons of Julanda and were living in Sohar, received a letter from the Prophet Mohammed exhorting them to convert to his new religion. Delegations between the kings and the Prophet were exchanged to study and consider this. Abd and Jaifar were convinced and converted freely, and it followed that Islam was accepted peacefully in Oman, without coercion.

The two kings of Oman united the Arab tribes and expelled the Persians. While the appointment of the governors of the Muslims was at that time the duty of the caliphs – first Abu Bakr, then Umar bin Al Khattab — the political power remained in the hands of the Al Julanda dynasty until the time that Oman was annexed to Basra by the third caliph, Uthman bin Affan.

It is said that the Prophet once sent a man to another region of Arabia, where he was insulted and beaten. He returned to the Prophet and told him about it. Thereupon the Prophet praised the residents of Oman: “If you had come to the people of Oman, so would they neither have insulted nor beaten you.”

Religious ties in Zanzibar

coran

The Omani rulers who were based in Zanzibar were open and tolerant toward Christians in East Africa. In 1868 the Omani Sultan Majid (1834-1870) bestowed a vast tract of land to the “Fathers of the Holy Ghost” north of Bagamoyo on the mainland coast, in order for them to build the first mission in East Africa. The mission on this land grant is still active today.

Sultan Majid also strongly supported the work of the German missionary and linguist Dr. Johann Ludwig Krapf (1810-1885), who was sent to East Africa by the British Church Missionary Society. He compiled the first grammar and dictionary of the Swahili language, and translated the Book of Genesis into Swahili.

When the first printing press was brought to East Africa under the reign of Sultan Bargash (1837-1888), the missionaries used it to print Christian literature in Swahili to support their efforts on the mainland. They were helped in their translations by the local scholar Sheikh Abdel-Aziz bin Abd Al-Ghani Al-Amawi, who in 1872 co-authored the translation of the Catechism and the Bible.

Learn Arabic

Arabic Class Programme

Assalamualaikum (Peace be Upon You).

Welcome to this page on Arabic language – this page is a dedicated free resource to students seeking to Learn Arabic  – beginner to advanced level.

Why learn Arabic?

Main reason it is the language of Quraan

1. Arabic is the 5th most commonly spoken native language in the world.

Arabic is the official language of over 20 countries and there are well over 300 million native speakers of the language. These speakers are largely concentrated in the Middle East, but there are minority groups of native speakers throughout the world. It is also an official language of the United Nations, the Arab League, the Organization of Islamic Conference, and the African Union.

2. Arabic is the liturgical language of Islam.

In addition to the millions of native speakers, many more millions know Arabic as a foreign language, since as the language of the Qu’ran, it is understood by Muslims throughout the world.
